Hydatidosis results from a larval infection of the tapeworm (cestode) Echinococcus granulosus. If left untreated, it can be fatal.

The second most common form is alveolar echinococcosis (also known as alveolar colloid of the liver, alveolar hydatid disease, alveolococcosis, multilocular echinococcosis, "small fox tapeworm"), which is caused by Echinococcus multilocularisand the third is polycystic echinococcosis (also known as human polycystic hydatid diseas…

Two exclusively New World species, E. vogeli and E. oligarthrus, are associated with “Neotropical echinococcosis”; E. vogeli cause… After eating contaminated food, the incubation period is usually a few months long. The infection affects the liver in about 75 percent of people who contract it. No significant investment for echinococcosis has been made, and therefore programmatic steps have been progressing slowly but WHO continues to bring the stakeholders together and further actions have been agreed in 2019. WHO has also facilitated the validation of diagnostic tests used for echinococcosis in dogs that is important for surveillance, and create a baseline in Bayankhongor province of Mongolia.WHO assists countries to develop and implement pilot projects leading to the validation of effective cystic echinococcosis control strategies.

This is an integral component to support universal health coverage. Both cystic echinococcosis and alveolar echinococcosis represent a substantial disease burden.

Periodic deworming of dogs with praziquantel (at least 4 times per year), improved hygiene in the slaughtering of livestock (including\n the proper destruction of infected offal), and public education campaigns have been found to lower and, in high-income countries, prevent transmission and alleviate the burden of human disease. The WHO-IWGE is in the process of reviewing the diagnosis and associated clinical management of echinococcosis and elaborating technical manuals with practical applicability.  Several workings groups have been created to cover the different aspects\n of the diseases and are working on creating those documents. Many of these people will be experiencing severe clinical\n syndromes which are life-threatening if left untreated.

The current Chair of the WHO-IWGE is Professor Thomas Junghanss (Heidelberg University, Germany),\n and Co-Chair is Professor Okan Akhan (Hacettepe University, Turkey). WHO is promoting One-Health approaches, such as the one developed by Dr Larrieu in the Argentinian Patagonia which involves community health workers, dog deworming and sheep vaccination. Mongolia has recognized the importance of echinococcosis as a public-health problem and, at the request of the Ministry of Health, WHO in 2013 conducted an initial situation analysis. The group is also working to promote the collection and mapping of epidemiological data.  Echinococcosis campaign in Eastern EuropeAlveolar echinococcosis is characterized by an asymptomatic incubation period of 5–15 years and the slow development of a primary tumour-like lesion which is usually located in the liver.
